Great Reasons to Install Mosaic Tile

Natural stone mosaics use small tiles that can be arranged in just about any pattern. Due to the wide variety of combinations, this can also introduce additional dimension to your floors and walls by using multiple shades and colors in the design.

Mosaic tile floors are attractive to most home-buyers because of this unique, intricate, aesthetic appeal

And, because the tiles are small with grout lines slightly depressed, mosaic floors are naturally more slip resistant.

The Not-So-Great Reasons for Installing Mosaic Tile

The disadvantages of using mosaic floors in showers are mainly structural.

Most installations use tiles attached to a mesh so it can be laid down in larger sections evenly and quickly. This mesh can prevent optimal adherence with the thin-set which can lead to loose tiles down the road and water damage underneath the loose tiles.

Small tiles that are laid individually typically have a tighter join, but the tiles don’t penetrate deeply enough into the grout for an ideal long-term seal. Eventually, this can also lead to loose tiles and water-logged showers.

Are there solutions that can minimize the downsides and help you enjoy the beauty of a mosaic tile design? Yes!

Best Practices for Installing and Maintaining Mosaic Tiles

  • Choose a design with tiles at least 2 inches or larger for shower floors. Smaller tiles may be used in other parts of the bathroom that experience less exposure to water.

  • Use the correct type of thin-set or grout for the specific tile material.

  • Make sure all joints, including the perimeter joints, are fully sealed with thin-set and grout.

  • Once the installation has cured, always properly apply an impregnating sealer.

Mosaic tile floors are a beautiful option for your bathroom and though it may take a little more care they can be enjoyed for decades.
